Spring Daylight Saving Guide 2025

As Daylight Saving Time approaches once again,

many families begin to prepare for the shift in their daily schedules.

While this change may seem minor, the one-hour adjustment

can affect sleep patterns, particularly for children.

As a Paediatric Sleep Consultant, I understand the impact this

can have on your child's well-being.

To help ease the transition, I've created a free PDF guide that

provides strategies for parents to mitigate the effects of this time change.

Understanding the Time Shift

Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday March 9th, and clocks

will move forward one hour. This can disrupt your child's sleep

routine, leading to difficulties in falling asleep or waking up.

The effects can be more pronounced in younger children,

who thrive on consistency and structure.

Tips for a Smooth Transition

  1. Gradual Adjustments: Start adjusting your child's bedtime and wake time in the days leading up to the time change. You can do this slowly, or a bit faster.

*See the PDF Guide for step-by-step details and examples

  2. Create a Consistent Routine: Maintain a consistent sleep routine that includes calming activities before bed. This could involve reading a story, dimming the lights, or practicing relaxation techniques.

  3. Limit Exposure to Screens: Reduce screen time in the evening, as the blue light emitted from devices can interfere with melatonin production. Encourage other activities such as reading or drawing during the hour before bedtime.

  4. Keep the Sleep Environment Comfortable: Ensure your child's sleep space is conducive to rest. This includes a comfortable mattress, appropriate bedding, and a darkened room. Blackout curtains can be particularly helpful, especially as daylight increases with the onset of spring.

By planning ahead and being proactive, you can help your

child maintain healthy sleep habits through this adjustment.

Embracing these strategies can ensure that the shift to Daylight

Saving Time is less disruptive and more manageable for your family.

Prepare now, and make the transition smoother for everyone

involved.
